How to sell paintings is an inseparable part of discussing painting works and the art market in general. This is because painting—as a work of art—has now developed into a form of asset that is collected in digital form.
Recently, the presence of Non-Fungible Token (NFT) has increasingly attracted the development of painting as a work of visual art that has its own uniqueness. In line with the characteristics of NFT as a digital asset that represents valuable objects with values ??that cannot be replaced or exchanged, the uniqueness of a painting is felt when it is transferred to this digital form of NFT.
As is known, painting itself becomes a work of art that has many fans. Along with the times, nowadays artists can also sell their paintings and market them more widely by converting them to NFT form.
Of course, this opens up a great opportunity for painters to enter the international arena or market. The works of these two-dimensional drawing artists can later be sold on the NFT marketplace, especially overseas.
So, how? Check out the full description below.
The Development of How to Sell Paintings from Time to Time
Before discussing further how to sell it, it’s good to first know the development of painting marketing from time to time. There are at least three ways to sell paintings that have developed to date.
The conventional way (wom)
In this way, there are two methods that can be done. For the first method, artists can trade their paintings in an exhibition. The first step is for an artist to find the location of the exhibition to be held, for example an exhibition.
When the exhibition is held, the registered artists will promote their work directly to exhibition visitors, and at that stage generally buying and selling transactions will occur.
The painter can also use the shop/gallery to showcase his work in the second method. Here, usually, there are artists who have their own galleries and there are also others who leave their works in galleries that are not their own.
Unfortunately, with this second method, artists must go through a series of submission processes. This is because the available space, aka the space in the gallery, is not wide. In this case, what happened was the curation process by the gallery owner. In the future, the gallery will also bridge the gap between artists and collectors when they are going to make buying and selling works.
Digital (digital auction)
If using the digital method (digital auction), a painting artist can first use social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, to Tumblr. The choice of each of these platforms can be adjusted at the discretion of the artist himself.
In this social media application—with all its power and influence at the moment—artists can sell paintings, either through intermediaries or not, using many methods, such as auctions, which will also take place digitally.
At a later stage, paintings can also be sold by converting the work to NFT form. As is well known, the presence of NFT, along with the hype it creates, has proven to be very helpful for painting artists.
This is because the presence of this digital asset allows artists to be able to show their work and sell paintings to a wider target market.
The reason is that later collectors will be able to attend from all over the world or from anywhere because internet access is wide open. In this case, artists can also offer and sell their NFT paintings in foreign marketplaces.
How to Sell Paintings Overseas Through NFT
The discussion here is more about changing the painting into NFT because with NFT it is possible that the existing collectors come from abroad (starting from listing on the marketplace and having the wallet, minting, shilling)
To note, NFT itself has appeared since 2014. However, the hype and trend of NFT itself have only developed in recent years. Now, as blockchain technology and a derivative of crypto, NFT is also gaining great popularity.
One of the NFT marketplaces that are now being invaded by many people is OpenSea. There, a painting artist can also sell his work that has been made into an NFT. For that, painters must first register on the NFT marketplace—for example, OpenSea. Considering OpenSea’s large base and being overseas, this marketplace is indeed worthy of consideration as a place to sell art to foreign countries.
After registering, the next step is to create an account to transact NFT. In this process, artists will also be directed to have a wallet where the assets can be transacted. If the registration process is complete, the painting artist can start making transactions, aka buying and selling NFT of his paintings.
Then, the artist must also do minting, aka the step of converting digital works into crypto collections or digital assets on the blockchain. Then, the next process is shilling aka promoting NFT through social media or other platforms. The goal is to attract the attention of collectors, including those from abroad.
Beyond that, through NFT, the way to sell paintings abroad has now shifted from what was previously very conventional (exhibition in digital galleries/auctions) to new technology, namely blockchain. Of course, with the wide NFT market, it is not impossible that foreign collectors will hunt down digital paintings by a painter from Indonesia.
