Let’s cut to the chase! Come and find out more here!
What is a Civic (CVC)
Civic is a blockchain-based identity management solution that gives individuals and businesses the tools they need to control and protect personally identifiable information.
This platform is designed to change the way we think about identity verification by giving users more control over their personal data, while enabling them to access various services without paying for too much personal information.
The Civic identity verification solution uses distributed ledger technology to authorize the use of identity in real time, and is used to share information sparingly with Civic partners after authorization by the user.
The Civic Ecosystem is powered by a unique utility token known as the Civic token (CVC), which is used for the settlement of identity-related transactions between Civic participants such as between customers and service providers.
Users can earn CVC tokens for completing various tasks, such as registering for services through the platform or introducing new users, while validators can earn CVC for validating documents for service providers.
Founder of Civic (CVC)
Civic was founded in 2015 by Vinny Lingham and Jonathan Smith.
Vinny Lingham is a serial entrepreneur who appeared on Shark Tank South Africa in 2016, and has co-founded several leading companies, including a South Africa-based investment fund known as Newtown Partners and digital card platform Gyft backed by the Google venture. Lingham is the CEO of Civic.
Jonathan Smith is the current CTO of the platform and has over 15 years of experience in the banking industry. Prior to his role at Civic, Smith held various managerial roles at leading companies, including Deloitte MCS Limited and HSH Nordbank, and was global head of Platforms at Genpact Headstrong Capital Markets.
How the Civic (CVC) works
Service providers typically have to pay millions of dollars to use identity verification services, to meet the (often mandatory) know your customer requirements. With Civic, instead of paying for the service as a whole, organizations pay for each data set individually, which saves significant time and money.
The Civic Network achieves this by having three distinct entities: users, validators, and service providers. Each entity plays a different but important role when verifying identity.
A user, the person whose identity needs to be validated, submits the relevant information from the Civic application into a so-called “validation contract”. A validator is
a third-party entity that verifies that the information is correct. Usually, the validator is a service provider such as a government or utility company. After verification is complete, the information is recorded on the network.
Service providers, businesses that require verification information, can purchase data using CVC, Civic utility coins, or tokens. Both users and validators get a portion of the CVC.
