The mission of the Worldcoin project is to build the world’s largest identity and financial network as a public utility, providing ownership to everyone.
The Worldcoin system revolves around World ID, a global network of identities that safeguards privacy. World ID allows users to verify their humanity online (“proof of personhood”) while maintaining their privacy through zero-knowledge proofs.

To engage with the Worldcoin protocol, individuals must first download the World App, the first wallet application that supports World ID creation. Individuals visit a physical imaging device called an Orb to have their World ID verified by it. Most orbs are operated by a network of independent local businesses called orb operators.” Orb uses multispectral sensors to verify humanity and uniqueness, with all images immediately deleted on the device by default (no explicit consent for data retention).

All Orb-verified World ID holders are eligible to claim free WLD token recurring grants (WLD tokens are not available in the US; see the Worldcoin Tokenomy section of the project whitepaper for details). This has the potential to make WLD the most widely distributed digital currency.

The WLD token is designed as a utility token with governance properties, empowering users by giving them a say in the future of the protocol. Beyond the conventional one token, one vote governance mechanism, the introduction of World ID paved the way for a one person, one vote mechanism. The two mechanisms can also be combined to enable new governance. Once launched, the Worldcoin Foundation will solicit proposals and work with the community on how World ID and WLD tokens should interact within the Worldcoin governance model (see the project whitepaper for details on governance and decentralization).

The user community will determine the utility of the token, but some use cases other than governance may arise. For example, users may decide to use WLD tokens to pay for certain actions on the World App or other wallet applications, to make other payments, or to signal their approval of certain initiatives or actions.
WLD is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Individuals will receive their user grants on the Optimism Mainnet. Therefore, most of the WLD transactions will likely be carried out on the Optimism network.

Founder of Worldcoin

Worldcoin was founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern (Max Novendstern left the project in July 2021). The most well-known co-founder, Sam Altman, is also the co-founder and current CEO of OpenAI and the former president of Y Combinator, a startup incubator. Initial research and development for the Worldcoin project were carried out by Tools for Humanity (TFH) and other partners.

Worldcoin has raised over USD 250 million in multiple funding rounds from investors such as a16z, Khosla Ventures, Bain Capital Crypto, Blockchain Capital, and TigerGlobal, among others.
